The Spanish region of Murcia is located on the Costa Calida which runs beside the Mediterranean Sea.   • Cartagena

Cartagena is a port city and naval base in the Murcia region. Founded by the Carthaginians around 220 B.C, Cartagena is full of history and is a must see for anyone visiting Murcia. It has many Roman ruins to see including a 1st-century B.C. amphitheater. 

The port area of Cartagena offers a long promenade with spectacular views of the Mediterranean and the surrounding mountain ranges, a perfect place for a stroll. There are several bars and restaurants available here to enjoy the local cuisine. Cartagena is guarded by two fortresses and another must thing to do is visit the Castilla de la Concepcion.

As well as an abundance of history and culture on offer, Cartagena also has some great beaches within easy reach, including the Cala Cortina, Islas Menores, El Galua Beach and La Gola beach. All the shops and other amenities you could need are here including a large shopping centre. 


  • La Manga

La Manga is known by many for its famous La Manga strip. This is the land which separates the Mar Menor lagoon from the Mediterranean Sea. The strip is 21 km long and roughly 100 metres wide. As you drive up the strip with water on both sides you pass many bars, shops, restaurants and of course hotels and apartment buildings. 

On one side you are able to enjoy the jaw dropping white sandy beach and the Mediterranean Sea. However if the water is a little chilly for you, simply cross the road to the warmer waters of the Mar Menor. The strip itself also offers marinas, water sports, boat trips, stunning promenades and much more. It is a must visit at any time of year but does get busy in the summer months.

Also located in La Manga is the world famous and 5 star La Manga Club Resort Golf Course.   • Los Alcazares

Located on the Costa Calida, Los Alcazares offers beautiful views of the famous La Manga strip fronted by the beautiful blue waters of the Mar Menor. 

Being located directly on the shore of the Mar Menor, Los Alcazares is a prime spot to enjoy all kinds of water sports. The gorgeous sandy beaches are perfect for a family day out with the shallow warm waters, stunning views and many bars and restaurants located along the coast. 

The town itself has much to offer including supermarkets, shops, and many bars and restaurants. There is a lovely street market held every Tuesday morning and also one on a Saturday morning in nearby Los Narejos. If that's not enough there's always the two golf courses of La Serena and Roda and a delux miniature golf course too.

  • Murcia

The city of Murcia is a university town located roughly 45 minutes inland from the Mar Menor. Despite being the seventh largest Spanish city in terms of population, it is one of the least visited. This means it feels like a traditional Spanish city rather than a modern tourist destination. 

The old part of the city with its magnificent Cathedral is perfectly blended with its newer commercial and shopping areas. The narrow streets give an authentic feel. There is lots to see and do here including plazas, museums, beautiful buildings and the beautiful Rio Segura, a river running through the city center. 

Outside of the city centre are two large shopping centres, the Nueva Condomina and the Thader. There is also an Ikea which is very popular with both locals and expats.

In terms of buying property in Spain, the city of Murcia itself is not prticularly popular with expats but is more of a place they go to shop or have a day out.

  • Puerto de Mazarrón

Puerto de Mazarron is a seaside resort located in the southeast of the Murcia Region on the beautiful Mediterranean coast. It is a 40 minute drive west from the beautiful and historic city of Cartagena. However Puerto de Mazarron has much to offer itself.

Puerto de Mazarrón used to be a small fishing harbour town, but in the 1960s tourism boomed and the town was transformed into a popular holiday destination. It is however still famous for its wonderful fresh seafood dishes and there are many bars and restaurants available for you to enjoy this. 

The coastline at Puerto de Mazarron boasts many kilometres of fine unspoilt sandy blue flag beaches. For the adventurous, there are many stunning coves and also trails to explore. It really is a beautiful area of Murcia with much to offer anyone, especially those who appreciate a beautiful landscape. 

Mazarron old town is approximately six kilometres from the coast, and the town of Puerto de Mazarron. There is the town hall, a daily market, banks, medical facilities, and shops. There is a real feel of community here.

The Port has undergone modest development offering excellent opportunities for purchasing a property. 


  • San Javier

Until recently San Javier was known as the location of Murcia airport. However, a new International airport has recently opened half an hour west of San Javier meaning the town can be appreciated for everything else it has to offer. 

San Javier is a modern town with excellent shops including a large shopping centre, supermarkets and an array of bars and restaurants. As well as having everything you could need it is just a few minutes drive from Santiago de la Ribera and the wonderful Mar Menor where you can enjoy miles of beautiful sandy beaches.

San Javier

  • San Pedro del Pinatar

San Pedro is located at the far northern end of the Costa Calida and the region of Murcia and therefore borders the province of Alicante. Its location means you not only have use of the Mar Menor, but the Mediterranean Sea as well. Beaches such as Playa de la Torre, Llana beach and El Mojon face the Mediterranean sea and offer beautiful white sand and excellent water sports facilities.

As well as the many beaches on offer there is a marina where you can enjoy local cuisine at several bars and restaurants. There are sand dunes and salt lakes where you can enjoy a walk or a cycle or just admire the wildlife. 

The town itself has many shops, bars and restaurants on offer centred around the church square. There is a local market every monday where you can buy fresh produce and many other goods.

  • Santiago de la Ribera

Santiago de la Ribera is located on the northern end on the Mar menor, offering stunning views of beaches stretching as far as the eye can see. The Mar Menor and it's clear, shallow waters are very popular with all ages and are in particular a safe environment for children.

  • Torre Pacheco

Torre Pacheco is a large town located roughly 15 minutes inland from Los Alcazares and the Mar Menor. The spread out town centre has a great selection of shops and restaurants as well as a lively street market every Saturday adding to the vibrant atmosphere. One of the towns main attractions is a 9 hole pitch and putt golf course. 

There is a train station which gives you access to the cities of Murcia and Cartagena making it the ideal location for commuters who want to live closer to the coast. Not only can you get the train to the cities but the beach is just a 15 minute drive away in Los Alcazares as well as many other nearby. Here you can enjoy the popular Mar Menor and everything it has to offer.
