In the 22 years it has been on our screens, A Place in the Sun has become a household name. The show takes you to sunny locations all over the world with several spin off shows including A Place in France, A Place in Greece, A Place in Spain, A Place in the Sun: Home or Away?, A Place in the Sun: Summer Sun and several others.
A Place in the Sun’s original format seeks out British families hoping to find their dream home in the sun. The participants tell the show’s researchers exactly what they are looking for. This may include the location, number of bedrooms, local amenities and so on. The show itself then follows the presenter showing them around 5 or so properties they believe to be suitable.
Over the years, A Place in the Sun has inspired thousands of Brits to begin their own search for a property in the sun. At Movehappy, we are based on the Costa Blanca South of Spain and find that many of our clients still talk about A Place in the Sun, Spain which we were actually featured on back in 2012! In particular it seems the show first of all informs its viewers just how much they can get for their money compared to other European countries and in the UK. Secondly, as well as showcasing the properties on offer, A Place in the Sun shows you the local areas too. We have had many clients contacting us about properties in areas they have seen on the show. One of the most popular areas which has featured on the show many times is the Costa Blanca.
A Place in the Sun – Costa Blanca South
The Costa Blanca region is located in the South of Spain in the province of Alicante. This magnificent coastline is over 200 kilometres long and its location on the Mediterranean offers a fabulous climate with over 300 days of sunshine every year.
This stunning coast has something for everyone. From larger towns with vibrant atmospheres such as Benidorm and Torrevieja to traditional quaint fishing villages such as San Pedro del Pinatar. Inland, you can enjoy a calmer way of life while enjoying the beautiful scenery and mountainous backdrop.
The Costa Blanca has become an increasingly popular area for expats including those buying a holiday home in Spain or moving permanently. In the southern area of the Costa Blanca south of Alicante the mountains are further from the coast meaning there are larger expanses of flat land compared to the north making it the perfect area for building to take place. You will never be short of choice when looking for places to buy in Spain on the Costa Blanca and in particular, on the Costa Blanca South.
The Southern Costa Blanca featured on A Place in the Sun on 7th September 2020. Presented by Scarlette Douglas, the episode followed Sandra and Robert from Greater Manchester on their search for the perfect holiday home. The couple declared themselves cycling mad, one of the things which attracted them to the Costa Blanca South. The area is very popular with cyclists due to its all year Mediterranean climate and endless cycle routes. For this reason, a storage space for their bikes was an important requirement as well as wanting to be within a short walk of the beach. With a £100,000 budget, Scarlette showed them around 5 different properties.
The first property shown to Sandra and Robert was a 2 bedroom apartment for sale in La Zenia. The apartment had two double bedrooms, a bathroom, large terrace and a rooftop solarium with sea views. There was also a large communal swimming pool. It was valued at £100,000 at the time of filming.
Property number two was a recently renovated two bedroom apartment, this time located in La Florida. Located 5 minutes from the supermarket and a 30 minute walk to the coast the apartment had open plan living, a balcony, large rooftop terrace with distant sea views and access to a communal pool. At the time of filming the apartment was valued at £102,586.
The third shown to Sandra and Robert was a 2 bedroom townhouse property for sale in Las Ramblas. It had access to three lovely communal pools and an astonishing five outside spaces at the house itself including a front garden, two terraces, a balcony and a rooftop solarium. The house was valued £111,207 at at the time of filming.
Property number four was another townhouse, this time with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, located in the popular area of Villamartin. As well as three bedrooms the house had several outdoor areas including a front garden and terrace, another patio, a balcony and a rooftop terrace. It also had access to five lovely communal pools and other facilities on offer within the complex. It was valued at £103,448 at the time of filming.
The fifth and final property Sandra and Robert viewed on A Place in the Sun was a two bedroom, one bathroom bungalow located in Cabo Roig close to the popular strip and the beach. The bungalow consisted of two double bedrooms, a bathroom, living room with semi separate kitchen, outside spaces and a rooftop terrace with sea views and access to the communal swimming pool. The final property was valued at £107,716 at the time that filming took place.
After they had seen all five properties, Sandra and Robert decided that there were two contenders; the townhouse in Las Ramblas and the bungalow in Cabo Roig. In the end their decision came down to location and they decided to put an offer in for the Cabo Roig bungalow, just a short walk to the beach. They began their negotiations with an offer of £90,000. The owner declined the offer saying they would accept closer to £99,000 and so Sandra and Robert offered £95,000. They then settled and agreed on a final price of £97,000, just over £10,000 below the asking price. Sandra and Robert were delighted with their new property close to the sunny Mediterranean coast in Cabo Roig on the Costa Blanca.
